MMA Gym & Classes
Mixed martial arts asks more of you than any single discipline. You need hands, kicks, clinch work, takedowns and submissions, plus the conditioning to hold all of it together under pressure.
Why Train MMA at Verano Boxing Club
Verano Boxing Club was built as a combat sports club from day one, with a full 22 inch competition ring, dedicated mat space and coaches who have fought and cornered at a professional level.
That matters in MMA more than in any other sport. Mixed martial arts is not four separate hobbies stacked on top of each other. It is one skill set, and it only works when the striking coach and the grappling coach are teaching toward the same game. Our coaching team trains together, corners together and builds progressions that connect rather than compete.
What an MMA Class Looks Like
Sessions run roughly 60 to 90 minutes and follow a clear shape: warm up and movement, technical instruction, live drilling, then conditioning. Coaches set the intensity to match the room, so a first timer and a competition athlete can train in the same session and both leave properly worked.
Striking for MMA
Striking in MMA is not boxing with smaller gloves. Stance is longer, the level changes are constant and you have to throw while defending the takedown. We build from boxing fundamentals, then layer in kicks, knees, elbows and clinch control drawn from Muay Thai.
- Footwork and range management in an open stance
- Punch combinations that set up kicks and level changes
- Defence against strikes coming from every angle
- Clinch entries, control and knee work against the cage or ropes
Grappling for MMA
The ground game is where most beginners feel furthest out of their depth, and where the biggest gains sit. Our grappling curriculum blends wrestling and no gi Brazilian jiu jitsu, with a focus on positions that hold up when strikes are in play. Members who want to go deeper on the ground can also train our Brazilian jiu jitsu classes alongside MMA.
- Takedowns, sprawls and scrambles
- Cage wrestling and getting back to your feet
- Guard passing, top control and ground striking positions
- Submissions from dominant positions, plus escapes and defence
MMA Training by Experience Level
Everyone starts somewhere, and nobody gets thrown into live sparring on day one. Here is how training scales.
| Level | Who it suits | Main focus | Live work |
|---|---|---|---|
| Foundation | No martial arts background | Stance, movement, basic strikes, breakfalls and positions | Cooperative drilling only |
| Developing | Six months or more of consistent training | Linking striking to grappling, transitions, timing | Controlled situational sparring |
| Advanced | Experienced grapplers and strikers | Game planning, chaining attacks, cage work | Full rounds at agreed intensity |
| Competition | Athletes preparing for amateur or pro bouts | Camp structure, weight management, opponent specific work | Hard rounds with coach oversight |
Progression is based on competence, not calendar time. Coaches move you up when your technique holds under pressure.
Who MMA Classes Are For
MMA at Verano Boxing Club attracts a wider mix of people than most expect. You do not need to want a fight to belong here.
- Professionals looking for training that clears the head better than a treadmill
- Boxers and Muay Thai practitioners who want to close the gaps in their grappling
- Grapplers who want to learn to strike without getting hit
- Complete beginners who want practical self defence and genuine fitness
- Amateur and professional athletes preparing for competition
The one thing every member shares is a willingness to be a beginner at something. Bring that and the rest follows.

FAQs About MMA Classes in Hong Kong
No. Trying to get fit before your first class is the most common reason people never start. Coaches scale the conditioning to what you can handle, and the fitness arrives from training itself within a few weeks.
Shorts or leggings with no pockets or zips, a fitted shirt or rash guard, a mouthguard and a water bottle. Gloves, wraps and shin guards can be borrowed at the club for your first few sessions while you decide what to buy.
Never. Sparring is optional at every level, and members who train purely for fitness or skill can go years without a hard round. When you do spar, intensity is agreed in advance and supervised throughout.
Single discipline training lets you specialise deeply, while MMA teaches you how those disciplines interact. The trade off is pace. Progress in any one area is slower, but you finish with a far more complete skill set.
Full contact MMA sessions are for adults, though younger athletes are welcome in our other programmes and often begin with boxing for kids before moving across at 16. Speak to the front desk about the right starting point for your child.
